Become a Counselor-In-Training with Swanton Recreation!
Swanton Recreation Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program
Somewhere between camper and staff, childhood and adulthood, dependence and independence there's a unique place called CIT, or Counselor-in-Training. CITs are not just older campers; they are leaders in the making. The program is designed for teens who are ready to take the first steps toward becoming role models, mentors, and future camp staff.

Our CITs gain real-world skills, valuable volunteer experience, and the chance to make a positive impact in the lives of younger campers. Under the guidance of Swanton Recreation’s staff, CITs learn the “why” and “how” of camp leadership while still enjoying the fun and energy of camp life.

Program Opportunities
The CIT program is offered during:
February Vacation Camp
April Vacation Camp
SUPER Summer Days

Participants may choose one or more sessions, with summer CITs expected to commit to the full program.

What is a CIT?

A CIT is a cross between camper and counselor learning, practicing, and leading at the same time. As a CIT, your mission will be to:
  • Transition from camper to staff with guidance and support.

  • Build confidence in your leadership skills.

  • Practice teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making.

  • Gain experience working with children ages 5–12.

  • Learn camp traditions, games, and activities and how to lead them.

  • Put the needs of others first while being a positive role model.

What Do CITs Do?

CITs move through the camp day alongside staff but from a leadership perspective. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with setup, supervision, and cleanup of activities.

  • Helping staff lead games, crafts, and themed programs.

  • Shadowing counselors to learn group management techniques.

  • Participating in CIT-only workshops focused on leadership, communication, and child development.

  • Supporting special events, field trips, and theme days.

As CITs gain confidence, they’ll be given more responsibility and leadership opportunities, all while supported by our camp staff.

Why Be a CIT?

The CIT Program is fun, rewarding, and a great steppingstone for teens who love camp and want to grow as leaders. Benefits include:
  • Gaining hands-on experience in a supervised leadership role.

  • Building skills that look great on job and college applications.

  • Earning community service hours.

  • Receiving First Aid & CPR training (Summer session only).

  • Making new friends, boosting self-confidence, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

  • Being first in line for future camp counselor opportunities.
